Peerless Altec 4665 input transformer is Altec’s similar but different junior sized version of the K241D..
For those who wish to know a little more about the Peerless Altec K241D & 4665...
When ALTEC was spun off from the Western Electric Co. they arrived with the product designs of the Electronic Research Products Division of WECO, including the expertise to design and build very excellent audio transformers which were marketed as Peerless Transformers from the Peerless Electrical Products Division of Altec Lansing. As Peerless Division manager Ercel Harrison once said: “Never use transformers because they degrade the signal... However, when you have no other choice,
get the best damn transformer you can find.” Peerless Transformers fulfilled that need for many years to follow.
In the 1950’s, Peerless designed the legendary K241D to provide balanced line level inputs for balanced tube amplifiers such as the Altec 260A. Peerless also designed a similar but slightly different 4665 to provide balanced line level inputs for unbalanced tube amplifiers such as the Altec 128A. The 4665 was also used in the reverse direction to provide a balanced low impedance output from the Altec 165A/21BR Tube Type Condenser Microphone System. The specification sheet for the 4665 claims “90 dB of magnetic shielding” and a “frequency response ± 1 dB from 10 to 25,000 cps” at a maximum level of “0 dB (6 mW Ref)” Ideal for feeding an unbalanced tube input. By contrast, the K241D is capable of handling a maximum level of “+8 dBm” into a “balanced” load.
Both have similar primary windings and electrostatic shields between the primary and secondary windings.
These are very different transformers, but with very similar capabilities. |
